JEAN MOON LIU

Jean Moon Liu is a granddaughter of Lew Hing. Lew Hing owned and operated the Pacific Coast Canning Co. in West Oakland, starting in 1904 until the early 1930s. Jean was born in Oakland in 1918, near Lake Merritt, away from Chinatown. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, she worked as a personnel counselor and accountant, and volunteered with many Chinese American and other organizations. She has written three editions of the extended Lew Hing family history and genealogy and organized the family’s reunions. Her daughter, Carol, is a member of the California State Assembly, representing the Pasadena area. Jean still lives in Oakland. (An edited transcript of an oral interview of Jean Moon Liu is being developed.)
