DR. RICHARD FONG

Dr. Richard Fong is the first son of Fong Wan, who gained fame, fortune and controversy as an herbalist and flamboyant businessman in Oakland. Richard was born in Berkeley, the city just to the north of Oakland, in 1911 and spent five years of his childhood – from the ages of five and ten – in China. He went to an American medical school in St. Louis, Missouri, and returned to Oakland to practice Western medicine. He also learned Chinese medical practices. His son, Byron, is a Chinese medical practitioner in the same building where Richard, the father, has carried out his medical practice and where he has lived for many decades, along the shores of Lake Merritt. (An edited transcript of an oral interview with Dr. Richard Fong is being developed.)
